The Top Reasons To Choose A Bilingual Elementary School For Your Child

Zoey Parker

What are the benefits of a bilingual elementary school program? Your child is ready to start kindergarten, but you are not sure which school is the right choice for your family. If a bilingual elementary school is on your list, take a look at the top reasons to choose this elementary option.

Your Child's Future Job

What does your child want to do or be when they grow up? While speaking two languages is not always a prerequisite for every job in the U.S., it is a growing skill that many employers may look for. According to the U.S. Department of Education, between one-half and two-thirds of adults across the globe speak two or more languages.

This means in the future your child may have an easier time finding meaningful employment or scoring the job they really want if they are bilingual—especially if they go into a field that has an international focus.

Your Child's Cognitive Skill-Building

Cognitive development includes mental reasoning, problem-solving, memory, and critical-thinking skills. While traditional school subjects (such as math) can help young children to develop cognitive abilities, language is also a skill-building tool. The thought processes necessary to switch between two languages and use different linguistic systems require the child to use logic, focus, recall/memorize, and problem-solving skills.

Your Child's Academic Skills

Like other types of schools, a bilingual immersion program also includes a rigorous academic curriculum. As your child learns a second language, they will also study everything from science and math to the arts. This type of immersion program gives young elementary schoolers the chance to become well-rounded students.

Even though the school's curriculum will give your child the opportunity to build skills in other areas, it is not the only way your child will master class content. Along with academic courses, the process of learning another language can help children in other curricular areas. The cognitive abilities your child develops can help them to better understand concepts in mathematics, the arts, and other languages (including English).

Your Child's Cultural Sensitivity

How much does your child know about other cultures? It is normal for children to see the world in front of them—and not much more. A bilingual school can help your child to learn more about a second culture. Instead of only reading about another culture in books, a bilingual immersion school gives your child the chance to immerse themselves in it.

Learning About K-12 Education Options

Hello, my name is Jerri. I have three kids who are all spaced about five years apart. Each of my kids is different from the next in personality. Their learning styles differ greatly as well. As a result, I had to search out various K-12 education options in my area to suit their exact needs. My oldest child ended up in an online program while my other two kids go to separate charter schools. There are so many public school options available today, so I struggled with this choice. I hope my site will help ease the confusion and uncertainty associated with choosing the right education option for your child.
